Cat-proof office chairs: what survives claws
The moment you stand up, your cat will claim your chair. Whether it survives depends almost entirely on the upholstery.
Which materials hold up to claws
Cats don't usually mean to destroy chairs. They knead, stretch and hop down, and anything their claws can hook into slowly wears out. Here's how common chair materials compare:
| Material | With cats | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tight-woven fabric | Best | Claws slide across a tight weave instead of hooking into it. |
| Mesh back, fabric seat | Good | Cats knead and nap on the seat, which is the tougher part. |
| All mesh | Risky | Claws can catch the strands. Sihoo, a mesh chair maker, lists pet claws among the things that tear mesh. |
| Velvet, boucle, chenille | Avoid | Looped and piled fabrics give claws something to grab. |
| Faux leather (PU or PVC) | Avoid | One puncture breaks the coating, and it starts to peel. |
Double rubs measure fabric toughness. A machine rubs the fabric back and forth until it wears through, and the count is the rating. Higher is tougher, and 100,000 is a very high rating for chair fabric.
Our picks
Series 1
The whole chair is upholstered, and the seat fabric is a woven polyester rated at 100,000 double rubs. That's a very high rating for chair fabric.
- Seat fabric rated 100,000 double rubs
- Lifetime limited warranty
- Adjustable seat depth
Amia
Steelcase's step up from the Series 1. It's upholstered in woven polyester, rated to 400 pounds, and comes in a tall version.
- Woven polyester upholstery
- Rated to 400 lb
- Lifetime limited warranty
Ignition 2.0
If you run warm and want mesh, this is the safer way to get it. The fabric seat takes the kneading, and the mesh stays up where your back is.
- Fabric seat
- Adjustable lumbar support
- Rated to 300 lb
- Watch for claws on the mesh back
Breck
A compact chair whose seat goes down to 15.5 inches, with a fabric seat and a stretch-knit back.
- Seat lowers to 15.5″
- Fabric seat, knit back
- 12-year warranty
- Tops out at 20.5″, so it fits people up to about 6′4″
What to skip
- Leatherette gaming chairs, such as the faux leather versions of the Secretlab Titan Evo and the AndaSeat Kaiser 4. If you love one, choose its fabric version.
- Velvet and boucle "criss-cross" chairs. They're comfy and pretty, but the loops snag easily.
- The vegan leather Branch Daily Chair. Its mesh version is the better choice in a cat home.
Give your cat a better option
The easiest way to save your chair is to offer something more appealing nearby. A scratching post next to your desk and a small bed on or beside it give your cat a place to be close to you without using your seat. If your cat insists on sharing anyway, a chair with a wider seat or arms that flip up leaves room for both of you.
